Lyrics for Something Better Beginning.

Ray Davies

They said this was the last dance
The lights went dim as I looked round the floor

Then I saw you standing there
And I walked up to you and asked for this dance

The band had started to play
I held your hand and I sighed

Is this the start of another heart breaker
Or something better beginning
Something better beginning
Something better beginning

I never thought I felt like this until I met you
I found something I thought I never had
The only time I feel alright is when I'm with you
And I can't believe it will last

I walked you home in the night
the moon shone bright as we walked hand in hand

I'd known this joy once before
But it came to an end just as it had began

Each-a step that I took with you
Brought one thing closer to my mind

Is this the start of another heart breaker
Or something better beginning
Something better beginning
Something better beginning

Song Facts

It is reported elsewhere on the web that Ray Davies wrote this song for The Honeycombs, but that is an oversimplification. Actually Denis D'Ell was passing Ray Davies' dressing room and looked in as he was trying to write the song. He said he liked it but Ray was apparently not very happy with it and told Denis he could have it if he wanted. So the Honeycombs recorded it and put it out as their fourth single in April 1965. However The Kinks recorded their own version which appeared as the last track on side 2 of their February 1965 album Kinda Kinks.

The Honeycombs version scraped into the top 40 (top 50 in the more respected NME chart)following the even less successful Eyes. Perhaps by then music fans had already heard the Kinks version and didn't need The Honeycombs one as well, although the two songs are very different in style.
